Passkeys Are Quietly Replacing the Password

The password is dying, and few people have noticed. Passkeys — the login method that uses your fingerprint, face or device PIN instead of a typed secret — are now offered by most major services, and millions of people have already made the switch without quite realising it.

They work by keeping a private key locked on your own device. When you sign in, your phone or laptop simply proves it holds the key, and nothing worth stealing ever travels across the internet. There is no password to phish, no database of secrets for hackers to raid, and nothing to forget.

The transition will take years — old systems die slowly. But the direction is set: the jumble of passwords we have memorised for decades is giving way to something simpler and far harder to break. Your next new account may be the last one that asks you to invent a password.
