Small Investors Are Reshaping the Stock Market
Not long ago, the stock market was a club run by professionals. Today, millions of small investors trade from their phones, share ideas in online forums, and move prices in ways that would once have been unthinkable. The balance of power has shifted.
Technology did the shifting. Commission-free trading apps, fractional shares and instant information have lowered every barrier to entry. A teenager with a part-time job can now own a slice of the world’s biggest companies — and organised groups of amateurs have shown they can humble even the largest funds.
The old guard grumbles about speculation, and sometimes it has a point. But broader participation is not going away. Markets work best when they reflect the many rather than the few, and the small investor — informed, connected and numerous — is now a permanent part of the picture.
