Volunteers Clean Up Riverbank in Weekend Action Day
More than one hundred volunteers took part in a weekend clean-up along the riverbank, collecting litter, clearing overgrown paths and planting native shrubs. The event was organised by a local environmental group, which said the river is an important home for birds and other wildlife, and that litter can cause lasting harm if it is left in the water. Families, students and workers joined the effort, and many said it was their first time volunteering for an environmental project. Organisers provided gloves, bags and safety advice, and local cafes donated drinks and snacks for the volunteers. The collected waste was sorted for recycling where possible, and the council arranged collection at the end of the day. The group plans to repeat the clean-up every season and to work with schools on lessons about waste, water and wildlife. Organisers hope the day will encourage more people to look after shared outdoor spaces all year round.
