Road Safety Campaign Urges Drivers to Slow Down Near Schools
A new road safety campaign is urging drivers to slow down near schools, crossings and residential streets, following concerns from parents and teachers about speeding traffic. The campaign includes new signs, bright road markings and visits to schools, where children learn how to cross safely and why visibility matters. Police and council officers will also carry out speed checks at busy times, and they say the aim is education first, with enforcement used where drivers repeatedly ignore the rules. Parents welcomed the campaign but asked for longer-term measures, such as safer crossings, lower speed limits on some streets and better pavements. The council said it will study traffic data before deciding on permanent changes, and it will invite residents to comment on proposals. Organisers hope that small changes in driver behaviour, repeated every day, will make a real difference to safety for children, older people and everyone who walks in the area.
