Marathon Training: How Beginners Can Build Distance Safely

Training for a marathon can feel daunting for beginners, but coaches say a gradual plan, sensible rest and simple habits make the distance achievable for most healthy adults. The key is to build weekly distance slowly, usually by no more than a small amount each week, and to include at least one rest day so the body can recover. Short, easy runs should form the bulk of training, with one longer run each weekend that grows over time. Good shoes, proper hydration and a balanced diet also help, while ignoring pain is a common mistake that can lead to injury. Coaches advise runners to listen to their bodies, seek advice early if something hurts and remember that walking breaks are a normal part of training. With patience and consistency, many first-time runners finish their race stronger and more confident than they expected.
